You may have heard that honey and lemon has been used as a traditional remedy for coughs. In DRAFT GUIDANCE, published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Public Health England, health officials have now recommended THE USE OF HONEY.
When suffering from acute coughs caused by a cold or flu virus, ANTIBIOTICS ACTUALLY MAKE LITTLE DIFFERENCE TO A PERSON’S SYMPTOMS; the body’s natural defence system works to dispel the virus within three weeks and doesn’t need the additional help to do so.
Using antibiotics when not needed will reduce their effectiveness over the long term. When used appropriately, antibiotics help to eradicate disease-causing bacteria, but when used ineffectively (like on cold and flu symptoms), they can destroy a wide variety of bacteria, including the ‘good’ bacteria within the body that helps us to digest food, fight infections and generally stay healthy.
With a weaker immune system to play in, drug-resistant bacteria will thrive and spread – passing along their traits to other bacteria that may infect the body, making them resistant to antibiotics too. Over time, this will make diseases harder to treat – and easier to pass on to others.
These ‘superbugs’ have been causing concern for some time and professionals have been imploring the industry and the public alike of the dangers of antibiotic overuse and the need to think about using alternatives.
With its sweet and unique flavourings, honey may provide a soothing distraction from a dry throat.
However, not all honey is the same. Although all types of honey do contain beneficial elements such as vitamins, enzymes and the presence of hydrogen peroxide, their goodness may be compromised by elements such as light, heat, time and commercial processing. MANUKA HONEY IS DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR HONEY, which naturally contains a chemical called Methylglyoxal (MGO).
In fact, MGO mainly occurs naturally in the Manuka plant. Add to this the fact that the plant itself is only native to New Zealand, and this means that the honey that’s created is one of the most distinctive in the world. Learn more about how to FIND THE BEST MANUKA HONEY.
