Manawaimai: Where over 50 Years of experience and science meet Nature

Manawaimai: Where over 50 Years of experience and science meet Nature

Deep within the rugged landscape of New Zealand’s lower North Island lies a sanctuary hidden from the rush of the modern world. This is Manawaimai—Comvita’s flagship Mānuka forest. Spanning 1,400 hectares of rolling hills and sheltered valleys, it is far more than a physical location. It's a testament to what happens when decades of human devotion, precision science, and raw nature align in perfect harmony.

When you taste a spoonful of Comvita Mānuka honey you are tasting the culmination of over 50 years of craftsmanship rooted in an unwavering promise: to care for the land, the bees, and the special Honey they create together.

The Landscape: The Perfect Bloom

The story of Manawaimai begins with the land itself. Chosen through decades of environmental insights, this unique property was planted between 2019 and 2020 with approximately 1.3 million elite Mānuka trees.

But nature requires a specific stage to perform its best magic. Manawaimai's secret lies in its breath-taking topography. There is a network of deep, sheltered valleys that act as natural heat traps. This creates gentle microclimates, shielding the trees from harsh winds and trapping the warmth of the sun.

The result? The trees thrive, bursting into dense, nectar-rich blooms. Because the environment is so perfectly matched to the trees, the land rewards us with a rare double harvest each season:

  • The Early Bloom: Just before Christmas, the entire valleys are blanketed in a sea of snow-white flowers.
  • The Native Harvest: In January, a second wave of nectar is drawn from the original, ancient native Mānuka trees that have stood guard over this soil for generations.

The Heartbeat: 100 Million Tiny Partners

A forest of flowers is only half the story; the true heartbeat of Manawaimai comes from its 1,500 hives and the 100 million bees that harvest here.

Our master beekeepers hand-select precise locations within the 1,400 hectares, physically moving hives so the colonies have direct, easy access to the most abundant zones of fresh blooms.

During the peak nectar flow, our team practices high-skill, precision beekeeping. To ensure the ultimate purity of our honey, they take extraordinary, time-consuming care to prevent the Mānuka nectar from blending with other surrounding wild floral sources. It requires immense patience and decades of specialized technique, but it guarantees that every jar delivers unparalleled potency.

The Legacy: A Thriving, Balanced Ecosystem

True expertise cannot exist without a deep sense of guardianship—what New Zealanders call Kaitiakitanga. When Comvita stepped onto the land at Manawaimai, the goal was never just to harvest, but to restore.

Through rigorous sustainable land management—Manawaimai has transformed into a vibrant ecosystem. Today, the forest is alive with song. Native birds, insects, and wild bees have returned to the valleys in greater numbers. Walk through the estate, and you are likely to spot wild ducks, goats, pigs, and deer sharing the land. It is a joyful, visual confirmation of a landscape brought back into perfect ecological balance.

The Accumulation of Care

Because the ecosystem improves year after year, the quality of the honey follows. The natural harmony of Manawaimai consistently yields remarkably high-UMF Mānuka honey, including our everyday wellness 10+ and 15+ blends, all the way up to our ultra-premium masterpiece: the UMF 29+ Manawaimai First Harvest (not yet available in the UK).

When you choose Comvita, you are welcoming a piece of this wild, untamed harmony into your home. It’s a trust we’ve spent over 50 years earning, one hive, one tree, and one perfect spoonful at a time.
